Land is allocated for up to 1,600 new dwellings "with an approximate average density of 35 dwellings per hectare (net)". This is a very low density of development. As a matter of principle, higher densities should be encouraged to reduce the need for loss of best and most versatile agricultural land. The Birchington development is one where SGN will require to keep a close eye on. If gas is to play a major role in supplying homes for this development, then there is a good chance that the development will trigger the requirement to reinforce the Medium Pressure gas network. The extra commercial facilities associated with the development will only increase the likelihood that the reinforcement will be needed.
